Can I arrange life insurance with a history of eating disorders?

To discuss your situation with a knowledgeable expert, please call us 0800 644 4468

Our process

When a client has a pre-existing condition or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone and speak to underwriters at many of the UK’s leading insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best possible terms for our clients.

Our client

Mrs W, a 45-year-old lady, had previously been declined life insurance cover due to ill health. She has a mortgage and two very young children.

She contacted us as she wanted to ensure that funds would be available to repay her mortgage should she pass away and also provide her family with a financial cushion whilst her children were still young. Mrs W felt concerned as she felt that not having life cover in place would leave her young family very vulnerable if she was to pass away.

The mortgage has a loan outstanding of £350,000 over a remaining term of 20 years.

Medical history

However, Mrs W has had a long history of eating disorders from anorexia and bulimia which have required some inpatient treatment. Also, following the birth of each of her children she suffered from postnatal depression which required medication for a short time.  These factors have resulted in insurers previously declining her for life insurance.

Although Mrs W had other additional medical conditions, the long history of an eating disorder was the primary reason for her being previously declined cover.

The outcome

Each insurance provider has their own underwriting criteria and we contacted them all to find the best solution.

60% of the insurance providers we contacted said they would apply an increase (loading) to their standard quoted premium.  The insurer who provided the lowest (pre-underwritten) quote said they would accept her application subject to obtaining a medical report from her GP, and as this seemed to be the best recommendation to our client, we helped her complete the application.

The medical report was obtained relatively quickly and assessed and an offer of ‘standard terms’ (no increase in quoted premium) was then issued by their underwriters despite her medical history.

Mrs W now has a £350,000 life insurance policy in place, which means that her mortgage will be paid off in the event of her passing away, or being diagnosed with a terminal illness before the end of the mortgage term.

We also helped her to arrange a separate policy which could pay out an additional £250,000 to her children if she was to pass away in the next 25 years. The total premium for both policies is £49.54.

Please note that the premiums provided are indicative only and are based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

Next steps

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online we would recommend you talk to one of our advisers.

Any quote we provide you with will take into account to your circumstances, your medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
