What is coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)?

A coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is a surgical procedure used to treat coronary heart disease. It diverts blood around narrowed or clogged parts of the major arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart.

Around 20,000 coronary artery bypass grafts are carried out in England every year. Most of these are carried out in men, and around 80% are used to treat people who are at least 60 years of age.

Case study: Can I get Life Insurance After A Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)

We were contacted by Mr & Mrs R who required life insurance to offer financial security to each other. They each receive a pension income but this will reduce when either party dies and they wanted to ensure funds are available to cover any shortfall.

We discussed various terms and sums assured and they told us that a policy each offering a sum assured of £15,000 until they reach the age of 90 years would be adequate cover.

Mrs R is a 65 year old non-smoker and we were able to arrange her policy immediately for a premium of £23.69 a month.

Mrs R, however, was a little more problematic. He is a 69 year old non-smoker and had a heart bypass nine years earlier.

Our process

When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By being upfront and detailed, we are able to obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

All Insurance Providers will increase the quoted premium for an applicant who has undergone a bypass. We discussed Mr R’s medical history with all of the Insurance Providers and recommended the company who were offering the most favourable underwriting decision.

The Outcome

An application was submitted and the insurance company wrote to Mr R’s doctor to obtain medical details. The process took two months to complete but Mr R is pleased to have arranged a life insurance policy offering a sum assured of £15,000 over a term which runs until he is 90 years for a premium of £59.42 a month.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote on-line but we would recommend you talk to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account to your circumstances, your medical history, as well as your budget!

An on-line quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
