How does Behcet’s syndrome affect arranging life insurance?

What is Behcet’s Syndrome?

Behçet’s syndrome or Behçet’s disease is a rare and poorly understood condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels and tissues.

The cause of Behçet’s disease is unknown, but most experts believe it is an autoinflammatory condition.

An autoinflammatory condition is where the immune system, the body’s natural defence against infection and illness, mistakenly attacks healthy tissue.

In cases of Behçet’s disease, it’s thought the immune system mistakenly attacks blood vessels.

The main symptoms of Behçet’s disease include*:
  • genital and mouth ulcers
  • red, painful eyes and blurred vision
  • acne-like spots
  • headaches
  • painful, stiff and swollen joints

In severe cases, there’s also a risk of serious and potentially life-threatening problems such as permanent vision loss and strokes.

Our Client

We were approached by Mr K, a 38-year-old man who had been declined life insurance due to his medical history.  His experience of trying to source the cover he needed had left him feeling concerned, particularly as he was in the process of buying his first home.

He told us that his new mortgage would have an outstanding balance of £173,000 over a 30-year term, and he wanted life insurance in place to ensure that his family would be able to repay the mortgage should he pass away.

Medical Condition

Mr K was only a child when he had a number of operations on both eyes. It took a while for him to be diagnosed with Behcet’s, because the symptoms are so wide-ranging and general that they can be shared with a number of other conditions. There is no definitive test that can be used to diagnose the disease.

The medical history relating to his eyes resulted in insurers declining him for life insurance.

Each insurance provider has their own underwriting guide and we contacted them all to find the best solution for him.

Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.

The outcome

Most insurers told us that they would either decline his application, or increase the monthly premium to an amount which we knew was beyond Mr K’s budget. However, one provider told us that they would consider Mr K’s application more favourably than the other providers we had spoken to. An application was submitted and the insurance provider requested a report from his GP.

The insurer was able to offer Mr K a Level Term Life or earlier Terminal Illness policy with an initial sum assured of £173,000, over a term of 30 years for a standard monthly premium of £30.73, and Mr K and his family were delighted with the outcome.
