Our process

When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By being upfront and detailed, we are able to obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

The background to the story

Our client is a 41 year old non smoker who was looking for life insurance to protect his mortgage and to leave his partner some money if he were to pass away whilst he is of working age.

He was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in his early 20’s, however he has never needed an operation, no longer needs any medication and has had no flare ups for a year.

Crohn’s disease is a long-term condition that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive system.

Inflammation can affect any part of the digestive system, from the mouth to the back passage, but most commonly occurs in the last section of the small intestine (ileum) or the large intestine (colon).

Common symptoms can include:

abdominal pain
fatigue (extreme tiredness)
unintended weight loss
blood and mucus in your faeces (stools)
People with Crohn’s disease sometimes go for long periods without symptoms or with very mild symptoms. This is known as remission. Remission can be followed by periods where symptoms flare up and become particularly troublesome.

The Outcome

Owing to our clients history, we were able to help him arrange £250,000 of life cover at a standard premium of £27.48 per month which was not increased by the Insurer.

Had he been on medication, we could have still arranged life cover but the premium would have likely to be increased owing to the greater risk to the insurer.

The client did not opt for critical illness cover, if he had however, this premium would have been increased owing to his Crohn’s disease.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

Next steps

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote on-line but we would recommend you talk to one of our advisers.

Your adviser will take into account your medical history. Any quote which they provide to you will take into account to your situation, your medical history, as well as your budget!

An on-line quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
