Can life insurance companies access medical records? Ask the Adviser

Can life insurance companies access medical records?

Ask the Adviser – Molly Higgins

The short answer is yes, but not without your permission.

If you are applying for life insurance, critical illness or income protection, your insurer may ask you for permission to contact your GP so that they can obtain details of your medical history.

There may be many reasons for this:

  • The level of insurance cover you are applying for
  • You have a pre-existing medical condition
  • The combination of your age and level of cover applied for
  • A claim has been made and certain details need to be validated prior to payment

When you submit an application, your insurer will decide whether they need to obtain details from your medical records and if so, they will send you a declaration form called an AMRA ( Access to Medical Reports Act). You will need to sign this form and return it to them so that they can request the information they require to assess your application.

If you have any questions about this or any other protection related queries, for example, what type of insurance is most suitable for me? or how much cover do I need? Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, and speak to one of our friendly Advisers who are always on hand to assist you – there is no such thing as a silly question!

Our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs.  You don’t pay us directly but we get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.

We are advisers, not salespeople. You and your family come first and are at the heart of any advice that we provide. We like to think that we are friendly, approachable and professional! But don’t take our word for it, have a look at what our clients say about us.

Next steps

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
