Fibromyalgia – how will it affect a life insurance application?

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is also called Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). It is a long-term condition which causes pain all over the body.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

  • increased sensitivity to pain
  • extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • muscle stiffness
  • difficulty sleeping
  • problems with mental processes (known as “fibro-fog”), such as problems with memory and concentration
  • headaches
  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a digestive condition that causes stomach pain and bloating

Our client

We were approached by a 62-year-old lady who wanted to arrange a Whole of Life policy. She didn’t want to leave the financial burden of her funeral costs on her family when she passes away.

She had been referred to us by a friend and told us that she had previously been declined cover by one of the UK’s leading insurers.

Medical History of Fibromyalgia

Our client told us she was 5 ft 5 inches tall and weighed 16 stone – so her body mass index (BMI) was 37.2.

In 2008, she was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. It had increased her sensitivity to pain, plus she was experiencing muscle stiffness and extreme tiredness (fatigue).

Sadly her condition has progressed and she now uses crutches to aid her mobility. In addition, she takes several types of medication for pain management.

Owing to the Fibromyalgia she has suffered from depression for the last 20 years and takes medication to control the symptoms.

In addition to the Fibromyalgia and depression, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Luckily, the cancer was discovered early and there had been no spread. The grade and stage of the cancer were low, and she underwent a lumpectomy. This was followed by a short spell of radiotherapy.

Our Process and advice

At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies who don’t deal directly with the public. These companies offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.

Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients. Which avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.

Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium? (this is an additional sum charged on top of their standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk). Or, exclude a condition?

Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.

We have up to date knowledge of the ever-changing landscape of underwriting for all providers in the UK. Future Proof is committed to thorough research so that you don’t have to. What’s more, our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs.  You don’t pay us directly but we do get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.

The Outcome

After the insurer had assessed a report from her GP, they offered her the cover, albeit with a 100% loading, which she was happy to accept.

Our client now has a Whole of Life policy with a sum assured of £10,000 (with an index-linked option) for a monthly premium of £46.94.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example. Which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

Next steps

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
