Weight Loss Surgery Life Insurance Future Proof

How will a gastric band affect my Life Insurance?

Weight loss surgery

Weight loss surgery is sometimes used to treat people who are very obese.

It can lead to significant weight loss and help reduce the risk of developing many obesity-related conditions, such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.

Having an operation to fit a gastric band is a major operation.

When you apply for insurance, the insurer will fully assess the level of risk you present and a number of different factors will also be considered:

  • your age
  • medical history
  • current health
  • weight

All of the above will have an impact on the premium an insurer will charge (they could also result in cover being declined).   All insurance companies assess risk differently, and we will only make applications to the insurers who we know will deal with your application most favourably.

Our client

Our client, Mr R, is a diabetic and had undergone gastric band surgery, but he still had a slightly high BMI. He wanted a life insurance policy in joint names with his partner to protect his mortgage of £110,000, over a term of 21 years.

Our process and advice

At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies who don’t deal directly with the public. They can offer more specialised policies that are designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.

Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients, which avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.

Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium? (this is an additional sum charged on top of their standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk).

Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.

We have up to date knowledge of the ever-changing landscape of underwriting for all providers in the UK. Future Proof is committed to thorough research so that you don’t have to. What’s more, our advice comes at no obligation and with no hidden costs.  You don’t pay us directly but we do get paid by the insurer if you decide to start a policy with them.

Due to his medical history, we applied to two different providers to ensure that we were able to secure the best cover for our client.

The Outcome

The two insurers we applied to assessed the risk in different ways.

One provider offered terms with a 75% rating, which increased his monthly premium to £74.36 – this was because they disregarded his gastric band surgery.

The other provider offered terms with a 100% rating, so therefore a monthly premium of £89.24 – they did take into account our client’s gastric band together his diabetes and BMI.

We presented both options to the client who understandably chose the cover with the lower monthly premium.

Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

All our case studies are based on actual client scenarios, many of which pre-date 2020.  We are confident that the acceptance decision made by the insurers would still be offered, although it is likely that the rates will have changed, your own circumstances will determine whether what amount will be payable by you and would be fully discussed with you before any plan is implemented.

Next steps

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
