Can I get life insurance after having a heart attack?

Our process

We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

Our Case Study

We were approached by Mr M, a 59 year old non-smoker.

He required a life insurance policy to offer financial security to his family, until his pension would be available when he retires aged 66 years. A life insurance policy with a sum assured of £50,000 over a 7 year term fitted his requirements. However, he was concerned that his medical history would stop him from obtaining life insurance.

Mr M had suffered a heart attack at 52 years although he had made a good recovery, once a stent had been fitted.

It is difficult for an Insurance Provider to offer an estimated underwriting decision for heart problems due to the detailed medical information which must be assessed. We contacted all of the various providers and they suggested the premium would be increased by anywhere between an additional 100% and 200%. Owing to the increased risk posed by his health condition.

The initial quote for a level term policy with a sum assured of £50,000 over a 7 year term was quoted as between £15 and £19 a month. We advised that the final premium could be anywhere between £30.00 and £57.00 a month.

Due to the disparities in the costs, we recommended that Mr M applied to two insurance providers at the same time and choose the most favourable offer. Both companies wrote to Mr M’s GP and assessed his medical records.

The first Insurance Provider offered the policy with a premium of £41.15 a month. The second provider offered the insurance for a monthly premium of £30.80.

Mr M was pleased to obtain a policy which is over £10 a month lower in cost than the next alternative.
