Can I have more than one life insurance policy?

Ask the adviser – Lewis Breach

In short – Yes, there is no problem in having more than one life insurance policy and you are allowed to have as many insurance policies as necessary.

Advisers can recommend separate plans for each individual depending on the needs being addressed. For example, a Decreasing Term life insurance policy to cover a capital and repayment mortgage, and an increasing Family Income Benefit policy to provide financial security for your family which could cover bills and day to day living costs. Advisers may also recommend additional policies to cover any loans which will need to be repaid.

These would all be allowed and the policyholder would not be over-insured because each policy covers a potential requirement for funds in the event of a claim.

If somebody needed cover insuring £1 million upon their death, but their income was £20,000 per annum, then an insurer would rightly question why this level of cover was required.

Each insurer asks a question around this during the application process.

For example, ‘Including the sum assured applied for in this application, will the total level of cover you have in place exceed £1 million?’

If the answer is yes, then subsequent questions will usually be asked by the underwriters to establish what the cover is intended to provide for.

Non-disclosure is where a client through intent or ignorance, fails to disclose essential information to an insurance provider when arranging a new policy. By entering into an insurance contract, both parties have a duty, to be honest with each other.

If a client answers any questions incorrectly, then potentially this could be classed as non-disclosure and their policy could be void and result in non-payment of a claim.

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!

An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
