Life Insurance for Pilots
Our Client
We received an interesting enquiry from a client who had recently qualified as a commercial airline pilot. He called as he had some life cover already in place, £73,500 over a remaining term of 13 years. However, he was paying an increased premium also known as a ‘loading’. He was paying an extra premium of £2 for every thousand pounds he wanted to insure. The reason behind this was that he arranged his own insurance whilst he was still training to be a pilot. As our client is young (22 years old), even with the increase in premium the monthly cost is £22.03.
Commercial airline pilots are generally considered ‘low risk’ by insurers. This is because flying large commercial aircraft is statistically very safe. In addition to this, commercial pilots must undergo regular health checks and therefore tend to take good care of themselves. However, not all insurers will offer premiums that are not increased. Even to fully qualified commercial pilots, so it is still worth asking a specialist adviser to do some research for you.
In the case of our client, we managed to arrange him an increased sum insured of £124,387 for life cover. The premium was not increased ie was accepted on standard rates. All this for a premium of just £6.00 a month over the same term. Nearly double the cover for just over a third of the cost!
All our case studies are based on actual client scenarios, many of which pre-date 2020. We are confident that the acceptance decision made by the insurers would still be offered. Although it is likely that the rates will have changed, your own circumstances will determine whether what amount will be payable by you and would be fully discussed with you before any plan is implemented.
Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

Whilst you are welcome to get a quote online, we would recommend you speak to one of our advisers.
Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account your circumstances and medical history, as well as your budget!
An online quote is just that – a quote – it isn’t a definite offer of cover. What really matters is the premium you are offered, after your application has been assessed.
