Call me backCase study – Can I get Critical Illness insurance if I suffer from Psoriatic arthritis?
We were recently approached by a 50 year old gentleman who was hoping to arrange some Critical Illness and Life insurance cover.
He wanted a policy which would pay out a lump sum to his family if he became critically ill of if he died before he retires.
He said he had approached 3 insurance companies himself before finding us on Google. On all 3 occasions he said his application was declined. He was losing hope of ever being able to arrange cover. We re-assured him that if it is possible to arrange the cover he wants, as we are specialist advisers, he’d come to the right place!
Once we had a good understanding of his situation and the level of severity of his psoriatic arthritis we began the research process.
More about Psoriatic arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis is a type of arthritis that develops in some people with the skin condition psoriasis. It typically causes affected joints to become inflamed (swollen), stiff and painful.
Like psoriasis, Psoriatic arthritis is a long-term condition that can get progressively worse. In severe cases, there’s a risk of the joints becoming permanently damaged or deformed, which may require surgical treatment.
However, with an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, it’s possible to slow down the progression of the condition and minimise or prevent permanent damage to the joints.
Our process
When a client has a pre-existing condition, or has suffered a serious illness in the past, the first thing we do is pick up the phone. We speak to Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. Discussing all of our client’s medical history helps us to identify the best company to apply to. This also means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By being upfront and detailed, we are able to obtain the best terms possible for our clients.
The Outcome – a happy ending!
The good news is we found a company who said they could offer the cover he wanted. This would be subject to the insurer getting a medical report from our client’s GP. They said the premium would be ‘loaded’ by 75% due to the severity of this condition, but at least they would offer him cover.
A ‘loading’ is the amount an insurer will add to the basic ‘quoted’ premium, to reflect the additional risk they believe they are taking.
Once we explained what the final cost was likely to be, we helped the client complete the application. We liaised with his GP and the insurance company and after a few weeks we secured an offer.
The final (underwritten) offer was for £60,000 of life and critical illness cover over a term of 15 years for £109 per month.
He was happy to accept this offer as he had lost hope of ever being able to arrange any cover.
He also has the peace of mind that he and his family will receive a lump sum of £60,000 if he is diagnosed with any one of the 50 + conditions covered by his policy.
Please note that any premiums mentioned are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.
