Special forces – Are Life and Critical Illness Insurance possible?

SAS, SPS, Royal Marines

Our process

After you have contacted us and we have discussed your situation, we will then call Underwriters at many of the UK’s leading Insurance companies. This process helps us to identify the best company to apply to on your behalf. Different insurers will assess your application in different ways. This approach means we avoid applying to companies who will end up being too expensive or worse, decline an application. By completing our research thoroughly, we are able to avoid wasting time and obtain the best terms possible for our clients.

Our client

Mr A, a 28 year old special forces royal marine required life and critical illness cover for his mortgage.

The mortgage has a loan outstanding of £250,000 over a remaining term of 30 years. The most cost effective way of covering this is with a Decreasing Term Policy.

However,  Mr A has experienced problems in arranging life insurance directly without an adviser because his occupation is extremely dangerous. He works within  a special regiment of the armed forces.  Mr A is under orders to be deployed but his location of deployment is classified. ARMED FORCES – SAS, Royal Marines with special duties when under orders cannot disclose country of deployment due to it being classified information.

Most insurers will assess the military occupation based on his special duties e.g. parachuting and where they are to be deployed; as the country of deployment could increase the risk of death.

The Outcome

Each Insurance Provider has their own underwriting guide and we contacted them all to find the best solution. Almost every single provider would decline all forms of protection insurance for Mr A as they felt the risk was too high for them to accept. However, two insurance companies would offer both Life and Critical Illness insurance, on the caveat that a special loading would be applied to the life cover premium. We advised that our client take out level life cover as it would provide value as the mortgage decreases and the extra cost in premium between level and decreasing cover was minimal.

An exclusion would apply to Mr A’s critical illness cover should he suffer a critical illness which is related indirectly or directly to performing his military duties.

Due to being in a special regiment the army will pay 90% of the premium as the premium can be very high.

Mr A was pleased that we were able to arrange a level term life and a critical illness policy with a sum assured of £250,000 over a term of 30 years for a monthly premium of £254.44 and after the military discount he would be paying a final price of £25.44.

Please note that the premiums provided are indicative only and based on this specific case study/ example, which is shown for information purposes only. Your own circumstances will determine whether the amount payable is more or less than the figure quoted.

Any quote that your adviser provides you with will take into account to your circumstances, your occupation, as well as your budget!
