Specialist advice at the end of a line if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer
Our client
A couple in their 40s, contacted us because they wanted to arrange life and critical illness cover. They needed to ensure that funds would be available to repay their mortgage if either of them were to die or be diagnosed with a critical illness.
Their repayment mortgage had an outstanding balance of £170,000, over a remaining term of 14 years. We advised them that the most cost-effective way of doing this would be via a Decreasing Term Policy.
The Medical situation
One client had previously experienced problems arranging Critical illness cover, because she has a family history of breast cancer and was told by a broker that she would be unable to obtain this type of cover. Many providers exclude breast and ovarian cancer under these circumstances owing to the increased risk that they pose.
She approached Future Proof to see if we could help and informed us that she had previously taken a genetic test to see if she carried the gene related to this type of cancer. Thankfully, her result was negative and she did not have the gene.
Our process and advice
At Future Proof, we have access to specialist insurance companies who don’t deal directly with the public. These companies offer more specialised policies, designed to provide cover where other major providers can’t.
Our research process involves us contacting many insurers to find out the best possible outcome for our clients. Which avoids any nasty shocks later on during the underwriting process.
Would the insurer add a ‘loading’ to their standard premium? (this is an additional sum charged on top of their standard monthly premium to reflect their additional risk). Or, exclude a condition?
Might they decline the application? We want to avoid wasting time by making applications which may be declined.
The Outcome
All Insurance providers have their own underwriting criteria where there is a family history of breast or ovarian cancers, and we contacted them all to find the best solution for our client. We knew from experience that most providers would not cover this condition. However, we found 3 who said they would offer her cover based on the information we provided.
Our clients were able to arrange a decreasing term life or earlier critical illness policy, which also included Terminal Illness. The initial sum assured was £170,000 over a term of 14 years, for a monthly premium of £166.72, which was offered at standard rates and no exclusions imposed. This cover also included children’s critical illness.
Wonderful review
Our clients were so pleased with the outcome that they left this wonderful review for us on our independent reviews site.
“Our usual insurance broker repeatedly failed to obtain cancer-free conditions from life insurers due to family history, despite negative gene screening results. We turned to Future Proof who immediately procured three quotes with reputable companies with no exclusions whatsoever. Excellent service and customer care. Thank you.”
